The Grand Opening Gavel: Why Bacolod’s Panaad Stadium is the Nation's Sports Capital This Week

As the dust settles from the record-breaking 30th Panaad sa Negros Festival, the spotlight in Bacolod shifts from cultural pavilions to high-stakes athletics. On May 9, 2026, the 25-hectare Panaad Park and Stadium will host the grand opening of the 2026 National PRISAA Games, bringing together over 10,000 student-athletes from across the Philippine archipelago. This follows a historic performance in April where the park's local trade pavilions generated a staggering ₱29.4 million in sales, proving that this venue is as much an economic engine as it is a sports arena. For the city of Bacolod, hosting this national event is the ultimate test of its readiness as a premier destination for large-scale conventions and sporting summits.

A Stadium Built for Regional Powerhouses

The road to this week's national games was paved by the successful conclusion of the first-ever Negros Island Regional Athletics Association (NIRAAM) meet held in late March. During that event, Bacolod City solidified its reputation as a sporting juggernaut by emerging as the overall champion, demonstrating the high level of local talent and the quality of the stadium’s world-class facilities. The track and field, which are central to the upcoming PRISAA competitions, have been meticulously maintained to meet national standards, ensuring that the student-athletes can perform at their peak. It is this consistent schedule of regional and national meets that keeps the Mansilingan district a buzzing hub of activity year-round.

The Economic Afterglow of the Festival

While the athletes prepare for the starting gun, provincial officials are still celebrating the financial success of the Panaad sa Negros Festival held just weeks prior. From April 13 to 19, the permanent pavilions of the 32 towns and cities of Negros Occidental turned the park into a massive open-air marketplace, showcasing the best of local craftsmanship and gastronomy. The ₱29.4 million in revenue reported by the Provincial Tourism Office highlights a significant increase in consumer spending compared to previous years. This "festival economy" provides a vital bridge for local micro-entrepreneurs, allowing them to reach a global audience without ever leaving the province.

    Civic Serenity at the Lagoon

In contrast to the high-energy atmosphere of the stadium, the Capitol Park and Lagoon remains the city’s favorite sanctuary for daily wellness and quiet reflection. Open from 5:00 AM to 10:00 PM, the park serves as the daily training ground for local runners and walkers who enjoy the shade of the iconic sculptures by Eduardo Castrillo and Francesco Riccardo Monti. The lagoon area also functioned as the high-energy launch site for the 2026 Panaad season back in March, acting as the urban gateway for the festivities that would later consume the larger stadium. Between the morning joggers at the lagoon and the national athletes at Panaad, Bacolod is currently a city defined by its commitment to both physical health and civic pride.
